How could I forget? Battlestar Galactica Season 3 premiered on Friday. This was the holy grail Danny and I have been waiting for since March.

I think the SciFi network is genius: wait 7 months for us to find out the outcome of the cliffhanger and we’ll go for anything.

Trust me, I LOVE love LOVE this show, but this season’s premier just can’t compare to the Cain Mutiny of last year. That two-parter was cringe, gasp, and squeal-worthy.

Still, I salivate for for new BSG. Bring it on Ron Moore!

futbol fan

I’m a fair-weather fan. That means that I only care about sports when something big is going on AND a social event is taking place. For example, I love playing tennis. Did I watch any of the French Open? No, I did not. If it’s on TV when I walk in the room, I’ll watch it. Otherwise I don’t care.

When UT played the championship game against USC, I tuned into the second half. I keep my ears open for news of UT’s wins but I seldom seek out sporting events. I’m glad I watched that game since it is perhaps the most exciting football experience I’ve ever had. I wanted to see UT win and I knew that thousands of UT fans were all hoping the same thing at the same moment.

So now we have the world cup. I’ve never cared about the world cup. The only players name I recognize is David Beckham and that’s bc he’s married to a spice girl. Why then did I feel the need to take a long lunch today at a pizza place where I knew they’d be showing a world cup match? Because cheering in a room with a bunch of fans is fun; even if you don’t know who is playing for what team, it is exciting to get caught up in the moment.

I was lucky. I caught the second half of the Germany/Poland match which ended with a goal for Germany in “overtime.” That was so freakin’ cool. I might watch more matches now. It was just fun sitting there with a bunch of dudes in business suits, eating pizza, and screaming at the TV. At one point, the owner came and sat down by me. I guess the lunch rush had passed.

Oh, and soccer players are WAY hotter than football players. Just FYI.

Favorite saddest

In my newly discovered addiction to youtube, I’ve gone back and found music videos that were my favorites back in high school.

Growing up in rural central Texas, I didn’t have a lot of options for TV. I would watch some nickelodian, disney channel or, later, MTV when I visited friends and relatives, but most of the time my brother and I watched the five network stations that came through on our antenna.

When I was 17, my mom got us satellite TV. We got it right before Christmas and we stayed up as late as we could every night watching as much cable as possible. We watched MTV most of all. We recorded Beavis and Butthead and watched 120 minutes as often as possible. It was the height of the grunge era and tragic rock: perfect for the isolated, or seemingly isolated, teenagers.

Some of these songs still rip my heart out. They’re not associated with a particular memory or moment, but they remind me of how it felt to be a teenager, to feel alone and dramatic and “tragic” in some way. Trust me, I didn’t have a hard life. I was just a very serious young woman and every lyric in every song MEANT something, or at least I thought it did.

Here is a short list of songs that still rip my heart out, and I love them. I was probably pining over a boy or feeling like an outcast, but they remind me of how music meant everything to me at that age and how utterly important it was to know all of the words to the new Radiohead song.

  • High and Dry - Radiohead
  • Glycerine - Bush
  • Strange Currencies - REM
  • Say it Ain’t So - Weezer
  • Far Behind - Candlebox
  • Hey Jupiter - Tori Amos
  • Fade Into You - Mazzy Star
  • Don’t Cry - Guns ‘N Roses

late to the party

It was out there. I knew it was out there, but did I dare search for it? This weekend I did. Fanfic: Veronica Mars fanfic to be precise.

I am not a professional writer of fiction, and I do not pretend to be one. However, after reading some of the Veronica stories posted, I thank GOD that professionals are doing the actual writing for the show. Admittedly, most of the bad stories are simply platforms for the the graphic sex scenes. This doesn’t disgust me or bother me. I kind of knew what I was getting into. Some of the stories (sans sex scenes), are actually very sweet if not a bit retarded.

Despite whatever intentions the writers had, the plots are usually boring/ridiculous and the dialogue is hilarious. Of course I read this stuff! It’s gold baby!

…back to my sad little UPN drama-world….

This week’s Veronica Mars was the season finale. In it, we find out that the mass-murderer/rapist/blackmailer was Beaver Casablancas; cute little put-upon, victimized, total sweetheart Beaver. Sigh, it was so sad but so believable. Who would really suspect that the puppy dog would murder innocent people and rape the heroine while she was drugged? Bravo Rob Thomas, Bravo. *slow clap*

In other related yet even MORE frivolous news, I found out that I am most like Veronica Mars.

You scored as Veronica Mars. You used to be really popular, but now you are the school outcast. You are really smart and somehow have all the answers… and you can snark like no other.
