It was out there. I knew it was out there, but did I dare search for it? This weekend I did. Fanfic: Veronica Mars fanfic to be precise.
I am not a professional writer of fiction, and I do not pretend to be one. However, after reading some of the Veronica stories posted, I thank GOD that professionals are doing the actual writing for the show. Admittedly, most of the bad stories are simply platforms for the the graphic sex scenes. This doesn’t disgust me or bother me. I kind of knew what I was getting into. Some of the stories (sans sex scenes), are actually very sweet if not a bit retarded.
Despite whatever intentions the writers had, the plots are usually boring/ridiculous and the dialogue is hilarious. Of course I read this stuff! It’s gold baby!
…back to my sad little UPN drama-world….

This week’s Veronica Mars was the season finale. In it, we find out that the mass-murderer/rapist/blackmailer was Beaver Casablancas; cute little put-upon, victimized, total sweetheart Beaver. Sigh, it was so sad but so believable. Who would really suspect that the puppy dog would murder innocent people and rape the heroine while she was drugged? Bravo Rob Thomas, Bravo. *slow clap*
In other related yet even MORE frivolous news, I found out that I am most like Veronica Mars.

I was going to pick up where I left off, when but when the blog bores even its author, it’s time to come up with a new plan. Here’s a quick play-by-play in order to skip the gory details of what grandma had for dinner and whether or not the tires went flat again (one did).
- drove to Dallas
- had dinner with dad, stepmom, grandma and bedridden grandpa
- dropped off marriage license at judge’s office on Friday
- had rehearsal
- mom was late, everyone stuck in traffic, somewhat stressful but not too bad
- rehearsal dinner: good but somehow unsupervised little kids tackled grandma. She survived and the kids mellowed out.
- wedding day: I got up, drove to wedding site, got ready, had friends and bridesmaid show up, saw some annoying relatives who fortunately stayed away as I prepped for the ceremony
- judge was running late and showed up 10 min before ceremony. My heart attack was averted.
- ceremony lasted less than three minutes. Despite the fact that the judge was a bit of a retard (3 mistakes in under 3 minutes) we got married
- our photographer was great. She tactfully managed a roomful of noisy people in order to get some good posed group shots before lunch was served.
- roughly an hour after the ceremony, we cut the cakes (carrot and chocolate) and had the toasts.
- around 3:00, folks started leaving. Danny and I loaded up the car and went back to the hotel to rest before dinner.
- got back to hotel, took some headache meds and a nap. Got up and dressed casually (super casual) for dinner at Chuy’s
- drove to chuys with the family and met more family for a big ass dinner. Chuy’s was packed but we got our own dining room after waiting an hour. It was fun and no elderly family members were body-slammed.
- went back to the hotel, made the rounds to say goodnight, then crashed around 1am.
- had breakfast on Sunday morning, loaded up the car, went by to see aunt and uncle and watch wedding video and then hit the road for Austin
- got to Austin, had pizza dinner with Daniel, hung out with Mike and Alba, ate leftover wedding cake, watched some Southpark and crashed on the futon.
- woke up at 6am to head to airport. The plane left on time and arrived on schedule. However, our fucking train home turned into three different trains as we were shuttled between them. Major suckage but we made it home by noon.
- saw the kitties, went and got lunch, crashed for a while, made phone calls, and chilled at home.
- got up and went to work the next day.
We left California on Tuesday evening at 5:20. Danny had taken the day off and I went in for a meeting in the morning. Our flight went well until we got over west Texas and hit some storms. Apparently, our pilot went around the bad weather by flying over Mexico. It was cool watching the lightning from the plane. Even though we weren’t near it, it made me wonder what it would be like if we had been hit by lightning. Scary.
Our flight got in at 11:30 instead of 10:30. After picking up our rental car, a Pontiac minivan (pimpin’), we hit the only restaurant that was still open. Correction: we hit the best cheap, decent restaurant that was still open: Taco Cabana. We then drove over to Daniel’s apartment where he had left us a hidden key to get in. We weren’t worried about waking him since he played a show in Houston that night.
We unloaded his stuff, set up the futon, and made ourselves comfortable. Daniel was supposed to get in around 2am. As we were getting ready for bed, he rolled in at 2:45. I felt so bad for him; he had work at 9 the next morning. After a brief conversation, we all crashed.
The next morning, Danny and I got up around 8. We had to pick up our marriage license by noon so that we could be married in three days after the 72 hour waiting period ended. After wishing Daniel a good day at work, we headed up I-35 to north airport blvd. For some reason, we thought the county clerk’s office was on Lamar. That is where the DMV and other various state offices are. After becoming kind of worried and frustrated at not finding our destination, we resorted to actually looking at the address I had written down. Guess what? We were on the wrong road.
We headed to airport blvd and promptly found the offices. I imagined that the place would be slow and packed like when you go to renew your drivers license, but this was not the case. There were three other couples there, including a man and woman in their late 60’s or early 70’s, who were picking up marriage licenses. Filling out the form and paying our fees only took about fifteen minutes. With our license, we also got some “wedding spam.” While I scoffed at it, I did understand its purpose. It’s basically a workbook to make sure that the couple knows A: what they’re getting into, and B: if they have skipped over any important conversations like children and finances.
Once our license was taken care of, we drove over to Trudy’s for some late breakfast. It turns out that they don’t serve breakfast during the week, but they do have a mean queso that is a delicious addition to any meal.
We gorged ourselves on Trudy’s fare, then went to get gas. Danny glanced at our tires and noticed that they were really really low. We checked the air in them and they were mostly flat. Great. Danny aired them up and we headed over to his brother’s apartment. The tires held except for one that had a slow leak. At least nothing else was wrong with the car.
Mike had taken a final that morning, so he was ready to relax a bit and visit with us. We drove out to his and Alba’s apartment and picked him up to run some errands. When the guys wanted to go to Fry’s that night, I politely bowed out. It turns out that I was even more tired than I thought. I slept from 5:30 to 8:30pm when Alba got home from work and brought us some pizza.
Since Danny and I were still on California time, we stayed up late watching TV after Mike and Alba went to bed. We also got to pet their cats who are notoriously shy. The orange one came up to me wanted to be pet. I forgot they had an orange cat. I hadn’t seen it in years.
The next morning, we got up around 10, got dressed, packed up and drove to downtown to meet my former coworkers for lunch. Lots of folks were busy that day, but three of my good friends, Matt, Jeff, and Ted, showed up. We shot the shit for a while and got caught up. Even though I don’t see those guys very often, it is really nice to sit down with them and visit. Being in CA for two years has made me appreciate my friends in TX even more.
Danny and I hit the road for Dallas that afternoon.
Tomorrow, the thrill ride that leads up to our wedding continues……..
Well, we did it. Danny and I done got married on this here day in May.
Really, the wedding was fantastic. The food was good, the cake was absolutely delicious, and I really think everyone had a good time, even the random family members I hadn’t seen in years.
I’m completely exhausted but still riding the adrenaline rush. Tomorrow, we drive back to Austin to chill with Daniel and pack for our flight on Monday. All is well in the house of Breen.
We’re heading to Texas tonight. I think it will be a really good week. I’m not totally stressed now, but check back in 48 hours.
I talked to my aunt today. In addition to picking out the final touches for the lunch on Saturday, I had to decide the ultimate question: pickles or olives?
Let’s have both. It’s my wedding. Why not live a little?
