countdown

Rings: check
Dress: check
Suit and tie: check
Shoes: TBD

The countdown to the wedding continues. In a week, we leave for Texas. There’s one more weekend to prep and then it’s all or nothing. So far so good; I hope the trend continues.

so tired but the wine was so good

My mother and her best friend Gerarda are visiting us this week. Mom has come out here several times, but this is Gerarda’s first trip to California. We have done much sightseeing in the last two days. They’ve been to San Jose twice, San Francisco once, and pretty much everywhere else except Berkeley or the beach. The beach is on our agenda for tomorrow after we meet Gerarda’s nephew for brunch in the city.

Here is a picture of Filoli gardens, which is located about fifteen miles from my apartment. Needless to say, it was completely breathtaking.

Sweet Zombie Jesus

Since I’m going to hell anyway, here is a tidbit from the Futurama encyclopedia:

Jesus
In the 31st century, the word “Jesus” has become a standard exclamation of amazement, usually used by old people. Examples include, “Holy Zombie Jesus!” and “Sweet Zombie Jesus!” Due to the Zombie content, it is fair to assume that Jesus was not at his physical prime during his second coming.

Happy Easter!

what? and….what?

Throughout my life, I’ve been happy, even grateful at times, to have a simple, boring name. There are drawbacks though. Tonight, at midnight (of course!), I received this in my email.

Ummmm…okay? If you know me, I can appreciate this as a good joke. This is not from someone I know. It is for some other Sarah. I really don’t think it’s spam either. It’s just….weird. I mean, what?

For more weirdness, check out bible ball. Of course! Combine the most boring sport with the most boring subject matter ever! I essentially failed Sunday school, so no, bible ball does not appeal to me.

stopped raining

It finally stopped raining today. I like the rain, but enough is enough. Aside from the absence of rain, it was unseasonably warm here. I wore shorts. Sometimes it’s so cool I can’t wear shorts in July.

To celebrate the unusual weather and Danny having tomorrow off for Good Friday, we went to play tennis after work. Even though we are both kind of bad at it, it was a lot of fun. I used to play tennis in HS and I really miss it. It was the one sport I was kind of good at. I lettered in tennis however I think this was because I was the oldest person on the team my Junior year and I’d been on JV long enough. By the way, we didn’t have to try out for tennis. Pretty much anyone who wanted to could play. The best thing about tennis tournaments wasn’t winning (because I didn’t) but playing your match and then just hanging out with your friends for the rest of the day. Tennis meets lasted all day so it was a guaranteed day off from school. I got so many sunburns from laying out after finishing my match. Every friday in March was a tournament day, so I only went to school four days a week. It rocked.

In other news, I’m trying to eat a lot healthier and it’s really really hard. It’s hard because I lived on fresh tortillas, margaritas, and dessert while I was in Austin last weekend. Going back to salads and lowfat stuff is kind of a bummer. I’m not being too severe about it, but I find myself reaching for the chips and dip and I have to really restrain myself. Exercising helps though. It takes my mind off of it and makes me realize why I don’t want to jiggle excessively while on the elliptical machine. That didn’t really make sense, but whatever. In other words: 30 minute elliptical session + jiggly belly = not lots of fun.

Next week, my mom and her best friend are coming to visit. This should be a lot of fun. They are really fun to hang out with and don’t stress me out at all. I think the only way I’ll get stressed is if we run out of time to do all of the things on their agenda. Speaking of, I don’t think they have much of an agenda so they are at my mercy. It won’t be bad. I love being a tourist even in my own neighborhood so I’ll probably wear them out. No matter what we do, the day will end with excellent food and wine. Now, if I can just stay off the chips and dip until then….

This picture is from Walton park near my office. The statues are of a man and his two dogs, just in case you couldn’t tell. I couldn’t at first.

There are also some pics from my trip to Austin last weekend. More updates to come….

excellent trip

My trip to Austin and Johnson City was fun. I’m tired but not exhausted. I got a lot accomplished while I was there: saw lots and lots of friends, ate plenty of Mexican food, had a few drinks, got hot, cooled off, got hot again, got presents, had my teeth cleaned, watched some trashy TV, wore too much makeup, got some new jewelry, was driven everywhere by kind friends and patient family members, and made it home in time for dinner. Danny was happy to see me and I was very glad to see him. He’s a sweetie.

leaving

on a jet plane.

Heading home to Texas tomorrow morning. Family, shopping, bridal shower, drunken Saturday night after the bridal shower, return home on Sunday, reluctantly proceed to work on Monday. That’s the plan.

workout rant

So, I made good on my promise to myself that I will go to the gym at least once this weekend, or this week for that matter. I like going anytime between Thursday and Sunday because the gym is less crowded on these days and I can actually use all of the machines I like without lurking in the background while some poor sap feels my eyes burning through him as I count the minutes he’s been hogging a machine.

Anyway….

Tonight, I did weights. The gym was even quieter than usual. I started out working on my upper body, but I swapped out with some lower body machines to give my arms a rest. I kept my eye on my favorite machine, but it was always in use. Finally, I decided that I would hit it last. It gives my lower back a great workout and it’s nice to stretch immediately following this machine. I went over to it, but there was a group of three people standing around it, leaning on it, and using it for a minute at a time before resuming their conversation and using another nearby machine. I was going to give up when I noticed that they seemed to be focused on an adjacent machine. Since my workout is usually brief, two sets of twenty, I figured I could be done in about four minutes. I walked over and started to get on it, when one of the women smilingly said “Oh, sorry. We’re using that in rotation.” WTF? You’re either using it or your not. You cannot call dibs on a machine you’re not actually using. I was pissed but I smiled and got up. I went to get a sip of water and busy myself in the hopes that they would move to another group of machines to hoard, but they kept with their “rotation” for a while. Finally, I gave up and went and stretched out before leaving. As I was walking out, they were STILL using that fucking machine.

I’m pissed at those people for hogging the machines, but I’m also annoyed that such a large gym only has one such machine available. I mean, they have at least ten ab-machines available, but only one lower back machine? Irritating….

The highlight though was being quizzed by some random dude on the meaning of daylight savings time. He was hot: t-shirt tucked into his shorts, glasses, and a buzz cut with a middle bald spot. Nothing against balding guys; there are plenty of sexy bald or balding men, but this guy? Not one of them. Oh, and he also complimented me on my form. I said thanks and finished my reps.

Check out Land of Tamara when you get a chance. I just added her link to my “Links” list. Plus, her kids are so cute I want to eat them!
