why danny and I don’t go camping

Today was a very very long day. Like everyone else, I stayed up way too late last night and was not ready to get out of bed at all. On top of that, it was raining outside which meant walking to the train station in the rain, and then waiting for the light-rail in SF….in the rain.

My company is doing training for customers so most of the people in my group are sitting in on the training sessions. Aside from getting free lunch, the training sessions were pretty long and tedious. I did learn something, but I totally tuned out after 3pm.

At last, it was time to go home. I wanted to stop at a shop on the way to the train, so I walked in the light drizzle. Halfway to the station, the drizzle turned into sideways rain. Although my umbrella kept my top half dry, my lower half got wet. Yuck.

The trains were running late, so I got home about 30 minutes past my normal arrival time. I was wet, tired, and fantasizing about soup and hot tea. I literally ran from the train station to my apartment complex. As I turned the corner onto my street, I was met with complete darkness. Crap. The power was out.

I carefully went up the steps to my door and walked in. Danny had gotten home ten minutes before me and was taunting the cats with his flashlight.

Since we had no power and no food that was ready to eat, we decided to go to Denny’s and then Target. I changed clothes, said goodbye to the cats, and headed over to Denny’s on the other side of town.

I had the best damn Denny’s meal I’d ever eaten. It was so good to be in a warm, dry, and “clean well-lighted place.” Next, we roamed Target like old ladies in the grocery store: slowly wandering up and down each aisle trying to remember everything we needed to buy.

We headed home and the power was still out. Double crap.

After unloading our stuff, we laid on the floor and played with the cats some more. We thought about playing scrabble or using the battery power on the laptop to play solitaire. We could have used our flashlights to read books. No. Too boring. All of a sudden, we heard a buzzing. The cats ran to the door of the office. Could it be? Yes! The power was back on! Our printer came on and was clicking and beeping back to life. We joyously walked from room to room blowing out the candles and flipping on the lights. Oh beautiful, glorious, abundant electricity! We hugged each other as we both grinned like lottery winners! We were saved! We had TV, light, and most importantly, the INTERNET!

I probably won’t go to bed until after 1 tonight. I am still too darn excited about having my entertainment back.

So, this is why we don’t go camping. I’m sure it’s great and stuff but….naaah.

need sleep

I should go to bed. Really, I should. But I didn’t get up until after 12 and I’m just not that sleepy.

I am quite inspired by your blogs though. Dipu’s theme of turning points made me recall important moments in my life. Although they seemed normal at the time, now I look back and realize that they were major events that should not be shrugged off.

Lisa’s blog has inspired me to think more about why I eat certain foods and why I eat them in certain amounts. Her diagnosis of emotional eating has made me realize how strongly food is tied to my daily routine. It’s time for me to slow down on the late night dove chocolate snacking and web-surfing. Also, her lament over not exercising enough made me get up from my desk do some yoga before my bedtime shower.

Matt’s blog made me remember my HS and college buddies with whom I would spend many hours drinking beer and “authentic” renfest foot long margaritas while traipsing around the fairgrounds dressed as a beerwench. I miss those friends. I called one of them today.

Tamara’s blog has me looking at my vents suspiciously. *shudder* I hope the cats would notice if something was amiss. I hope.

Babs’s blog brought back memories of scary 80’s fashion. Has it been that long since poodle perms and sky high bangs?

And last but not least, Amy’s blog reminded me that everything comes full circle. It was a little over three years ago that she and her then-boyfriend Chris set Danny and I up on a blind date. Thank God we got off our computers long enough to meet one another. And, as they say, the rest is history.

Wedding update: We’ve set the date for May 6 in Dallas. Since it will be a small family affair, I’m tentatively planning a big party in Austin in a few months. Self-indulgent? A little. Worth it? Hell yeah! Will there be a margarita machine? Of course.

not sick anymore

I’m over my sickness. Yay! No more hacking cough to wake up to.

This week has been pretty nice. I’ve enjoyed starting conversations with “oh by the way, I got engaged last weekend. So, what is that you’re eating for lunch?”

Other than that, not much else is going on. Work is work.

Lisa is coming to visit me in a month. Yay! We’re going to do girly stuff and drink wine. I can’t wait!

The cats are bad. That is all.

an honorable woman

Well, Danny decided it was about time to make me an honorable woman. Ha! As if that will ever happen! Still he got me a ring and proposed to me on Sunday. It was very sweet, romantic, and most importantly, fun. Danny got us a room at a super fancy hotel on Sunday night, took me out for a delicious Italian food dinner, proposed back in our room, and then finished the evening with drinks and dessert at the Top of the Mark Bar on Nob Hill in SF.

We don’t have a date set yet but the ceremony will take place in Dallas which is convenient for both of our families. I would like to get everything nailed down soon though so wedding planning doesn’t drive me nuts. After all, I am starting grad school in seven months so I kind of need to figure out the plan.

second verse, same as the first

I’m still sick, but I went to work today, unlike yesterday. I’m not coughing and I’m certainly not sneezing as much as I was earlier this week.

It is cold and rainy outside. We went from weather in the 60’s to weather in the 30’s. It’s supposed to snow tonight. I seriously doubt that will happen. If it does though, I will take pictures (oh yes, I will).

Even though I was sick yesterday, I somehow managed to get up by 2pm, shower, microwave something for lunch, watch the ANTM marathon on VH1, and take these pictures of the kitties.

What’s that saying about idle hands?

actually sick

Okay, so maybe I actually do have a head cold as opposed to a reaction to my sinus meds. Suck. I stayed home today and have remained sniffly throughout. Poor me.

Staying home was fine though. I did laundry, pet the cats, watched oprah, and cooked supper.

later….

Supper was good, but now I feel worse than I did before. Ugh….head cold. Not fun.

For the sake of writing

I think I’ve gone into autopilot regarding this blog. I love to write, but I’ve gotten so conditioned to adding updates every few days that I feel like writing is more of a compulsion than a pleasure. Plus, if I update too often, you’ll know how I spend every moment of my time and, well….boring.

Still, I’ll keep updating until I get so busy or preoccupied that I forget to write for a month and then you can hassle me to update. Until then, here’s what I’ve been up to.

Friday night, I spent 3-4 hours at church setting things up. Decorating the sanctuary reminded me of decorating for prom: stringing up white lights, moving the stacking chairs, adding tableclothes, silver, and stemware. It was fun. I also realized that it was about as organized as prom decorating, except with adults. This meant only minimal hurt feelings and clique warfare. I didn’t discern any actually occurring, but then again, I wasn’t in charge or aiming to be in charge. No one complained to me.

On Saturday, I slept way way late. It was okay though. I dragged myself to the gym and had a pleasant 40 minute weight-lifting workout. Those 40 minutes have granted me over two days of pain, let me assure you. I’m so freaking sore. I focused on upper body and now everything from the waist up hurts, including my armpits. Sigh. Motrin is helping though. I want to tone up my body and this is the best way for me to do it. Still, it literally hurts to start lifting again. I used to love it, but then again, I wasn’t as untoned as I am now. The muscle pain, it will subside. I just have to keep going back until it feels good again. I know. I’m a masochist.

Our fundraiser on Saturday night went well. I was busy the whole time, but I had fun and managed to win a few items in the silent auction. Danny showed up around dinner time and I got to introduce him to a few of my friends. I bugged out a little early but didn’t feel too bad since I’d set up the night before.

On Sunday, I went to service, lounged around the house, ran some errands, and cooked a good supper. I also started some new sinus treatment my doctor prescribed. Today, I”ve been sneezing a lot. I think my body is still getting used to the sinus meds.

Feeling achy and sneezy, I left work at noon, came home, and crashed. Even though I know I don’t have a cold, I definitely needed the extra rest. Plus, work was dead today so I didn’t feel too guilty.

Today is Valentine’s Day. I like this day and I don’t. Whatever. Tonight, we’re staying home, cooking supper, and enjoying being together. Yay! No crowds. Just pasta, wine, chocolate, and Olympic coverage. What more could a girl ask for?

Here are some pictures of…

A. Boomer watching Animal Planet. He loves to watch TV. He is particularly enthralled with figure skaters, however it could just be a phase.

Here’s a picture of the flowers I bought at the farmer’s market yesterday. Now my bathroom smells like a spring garden. Hoorah. The flowers look like bunches of baby daffodils. Any idea what they are? Me neither.

*Unnnggghhh*

It’s not just the handfuls of M&Ms I scarfed down that are making me feel a little, I don’t know, off. Tonight (okay, on Wed night because I’m a little behind) they eliminated Nick on ProjRun. Nick! Nooooo! I mean, he hasn’t done well for the last two weeks but he lost to a fucking space suit made of shredded t-shirts or something. Not only did Kara have to wear that brownish abortion on stage but Santino freakin’ LOVED it. Ugh…

Even though the judges keep liking Kara for some reason, I want her gone. She is spineless, weak, fragile, and boring! Even Santino has personality, a shitty personality, but personality all the same.

I’m just, feeling…unggghhhh…….

Updation

I didn’t make up that word. Someone told me that they got an email from one of their coworkers in India that contained that little grammar gem.

This week has gone by fairly quickly. After reluctantly dragging myself off the couch tonight, I made it to the gym and did a few laps in the pool and a stint in the steam room. Then, Danny and I went to Chili’s. Now, I’m home and I’m pooped.

Tomorrow and Saturday will be busy. I’m doing a bunch of stuff for our silent auction fundraiser at church, and I expect I’ll be running around, stapling up things, making copies and telling people where to put the chips ‘n dip. I’m not in charge, but I’m on the committee which means anyone can ask me anything and I have to act like I know. The guy who does know is probably buried up to his ears in questions too. Despite the madness of planning a big event, it has been pretty fun. I’m in charge of publicity so I get to put a creative spin on bulletin announcements and reminder emails. As sad as that may sound, it is a hell of a lot more creative than what I do for a living. And we’ll leave it at that.

Last night, I had some weird dreams. To begin with, I dreamt that I had to take boomer with me wherever I went. Instead of being scared and running away when I took him out of the car or into the next room, he wanted to stay with me. We worked out a deal where he would burrow up under my pant leg and sit on my shoe/foot while I walked around working and doing whatever. Either he was much smaller in my dream or I wore bellbottoms.

I also dreamed that one morning we woke up and there was a tiny striped kitten hanging out with boomer and boris. They were perfectly cool with him. It’s like one of them split off a little part of his massive fat and it became a kitten. Anyway, I was sad when I woke up and realized that we didn’t have a baby kitty running around the apt chasing bugs.

After my alarm went off for the 4th time this morning, boomer started squeak-crying at me and getting in my face. I then remembered that I forgot to feed them last night. I got up and followed them to the food bowl. They blinked appreciation at me.

It’s entirely their fault though. If boomer hadn’t snuggled up next to me and started purring last night, I would have stayed awake.

My new thing

My new thing these days is reviews. This is because you, loyal readers, want to know how I feel about everything from my nail polish remover to that new hit song that spells out a dirty word (M.O, MOR, MORNING, double U Oh Oh Dee). Verdict: catchy and makes spelling fun!

Here is what I thought of the first set of DVDs I got from Netflix this week. I used to have Netflix. In fact, I had it twice before, but I cancelled it because discs would sit around at my house for a month and it just seemed like kind of a waste.

Danny and I rented:

1. The Office (original BBC version, first six episodes): I loved it. I didn’t love it as much as the American version, but maybe that’s because I saw the remake before the original.
The first episode is a little slow but it picks up a lot after that. Verdict: Recommended

2. Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow: I didn’t have high hopes for this and that was a good thing. Apparently, the plot picked up later, but I gave up after 40 minutes and went to bed. Danny liked it but was not blown away. Verdict: wait until it comes on TV

3. Be cool: I thought this would be funny. It was alright. There weren’t many LOL parts, just subtle chuckles. It was mostly about putting John Travolta and Uma Thurman together in as many Pulp Fiction-esque scenes as possible. Strangely enough, there were a lot of extended dance sequences. Vince Vaughan was alright but the shining star of this movie was none other than The Rock as the bumbling sidekick. Verdict: Good for a few Saturday night laughs, but you won’t watch it more than once.

Now it’s your turn. Got any recent release recommendations? What I like: Silly without being downright nasty (example: Will Farrell movies), Action movies with a really cool plot, sweet indie films, well-done fantasy movies, excellent sci-fi, and documentaries.

What I don’t want: Tom Cruise, Matthew McConahuh, Julia Roberts, Jennifer Lopez, or Cameron Diaz movies.
